Short answer
Kesar is saffron, the dried threads of the crocus flower. Ayurveda values it as warming and uplifting, and adds it to men's vitality formulas. Small studies suggest saffron may help mood, and a few have looked at sexual function, with mixed but interesting results. In food amounts it is safe; large amounts are not.

Kesar is the one ingredient on this list most Indian homes already have. Its place in men's health is less about magic and more about mood.
What it is
Kesar (Crocus sativus) is the dried red stigma of the saffron crocus flower. Each flower gives only three threads, picked by hand, which is why it is so expensive. In India it is grown mainly in Kashmir.
How Ayurveda has used it
Ayurveda describes kesar as warming and uplifting. It is used to brighten mood, support circulation and complexion, and it appears in many classical men's vitality preparations, often alongside gold-based ingredients.
What modern research says, honestly
Several small controlled trials have found that saffron extract improved symptoms of low mood compared with placebo. Low mood and stress are strongly linked to low desire in men.
A few small studies have looked directly at sexual function in men, including men whose desire was affected by antidepressant medicine, with some positive results. Other studies found little effect. The evidence is interesting but not settled.
Who should be careful
Saffron used in cooking amounts is safe for most people. Large doses can be harmful, so supplements should stay in the amounts used in studies, which are small.
It is not advised in pregnancy in medicinal amounts. People with bipolar disorder, or on blood-thinning or blood pressure medicine, should speak to a doctor first.
If you are thinking of trying it
Real saffron threads release colour slowly in warm water and smell sweet and hay-like. Threads that colour water instantly, or are suspiciously cheap, are often dyed fakes.
If low mood or low desire has lasted for weeks, that is worth a proper conversation with a doctor, not only a spice.
